6/26/2023 0 Comments Helen of troy by bettany hughes![]() ![]() ![]() At times it feels a bit muddled, with occasional travelogue introductions or personal anecdotes that don’t go anywhere or add much to the book. I really liked Bettany Hughes’ book on Socrates, The Hemlock Cup, but this one (the earlier of the two) didn’t impress me in quite the same way. That turns out to be good thing, as these are the best sections of the book. To be honest I was expecting a little more focus on literature, but the book actually mostly concentrates on archaeological findings both for Helen and the world she would have inhabited. This book tries to show the different sides of the infamous Greek beauty Helen of Troy – the figure of worship for many Greeks, the (possible) historical person, and the “bad role model” for women in the eyes of so many writers over the years. ![]()

Either way Captain America’s Civil War participation in his own title is very much of a sideline nature. ![]() Perhaps Captain America’s ubiquitous presence throughout the crossovers permitted greater leeway or perhaps writer Ed Brubaker was less than enamoured with the entire concept. Captain America was central to the overall plot as figurehead for the element of the superhero community vehemently opposed to registration. Marvel’s 2007 crossover blockbuster pitted opposing groups of superheroes at each other’s throats over the issue of whether or not their ilk should be compelled to register their identities with the US government. ![]() ![]() ![]() I have omitted whole disciplines of worthy endeavor.” Roach reveals many of these names, however, along with the stories of their quests to shield soldiers from harm and, if this fails, repair the often gruesome results. There’s no word on when the MaddAddam show might come along, but it’s good to see ambitious stories like this getting adapted. The story takes place in a world dominated by huge corporations, where a brilliant bioengineer - that’d be Crake - conspires to create a miracle drug that will actually bring about human extinction, making way for Crake’s more peaceful group of genetically engineered humans. The first book in the MaddAddam series, 2003’s Oryx and Crake, is actually mostly concerned with what led up to the apocalypse. Hulu, of course, is in the midst of adapting Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, which is about a grim future of another sort. Deadlinereports that Hulu is adapting Canadian sci-fi icon Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy of books, about a post-apocalyptic world destroyed by a pandemic. The fantasy and sci-fi TV renaissance continues apace. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments The dry jane![]() I was working full time as a journalist on newspapers – which I think I went into because I wanted to write and that seemed like a way to do it professionally – and for a long time I was focused on my career and it was just this sort of, in the back of my head sort of thing, ‘One day I'll do it, one day I'll do it’.Īnd I made a mistake I think a lot of people make, which is thinking that one day I suddenly have this block of time open up and I'd be able to suddenly focus on this goal with no distractions.
